Solons call for internet posting of voters list February 20, 2007

Posted by s511 in electoral reforms.

At least 25 solons today pushed for the immediate publication, preferably through the internet of the certified finalized list of registered voters for the 2007 elections.

“The availability and accessibility of this list is crucial in ensuring that its integrity is assured,” said Akbayan Rep. Etta Rosales. “If the public could access it easily, flying voters, erroneous registrations and such will be addressed and eliminated.”

“This will also encourage more people to go out and vote since in the past, low voter turnout was attributed to voters not finding their names in designated precincts, etc.”

To this end House Resolution 1450 was filed, calling on the COMELEC to post the finalized registered voters list on the internet in time for the May elections. It was authored by Akbayan Reps. Etta Rosales, Mayong Aguja and Risa Hontiveros and co-authored by more than twenty legislators.

“The COMELEC had been previously successful in posting the voters’ list at least in Metro Manila,” added Rosales, “and with enough political will it can do the same for the entire country.”

“Disenfranchisement is the root of legitimacy issues,” explained Rosales, “the more effort is exerted to get more people out there to cast their ballots, the less questionable election results will be without forgetting the need to address other factors such as violence and fraud, of course.”

“Which is why even as we push the COMELEC to publish the voters’ list we will also engage local government units and citizens’ movements to help us in helping the public exercise their right to suffrage in this coming elections,” added Rosales.

Dear Rep. Rosales:

I have been supporting progressive groups like Bayan Muna, Akbayan, Gabriela, Anakbayan, etc. in their campaigns on various people’s and environment issues. I’m also one of the hundreds of thousands of Filipinos here and abroad condemning the unabated political killings against Leftist non-combatant activists, peasants, people’s lawyers, party-lists leaders & members, religious, etc. However, I’m disgusted by the reports that its seems like Akbayan, AFP, Malacanang, Cabinet Oversight Committee on Internal Security (COCIS) are conniving to pin-down Bayan Muna, Anakpawis and Gabriela by filing baseless & nonsense disqualification cases against the progressive parties. As I see it, the AFP, PNP and anti-communist groups are now busy campaigning and demonizing Bayan Muna, Anakpawis, Gabriela, Kabataan, and Suara BangsaMoro party-list groups. The AFP, PNP and anti-communist groups are also actively campaigning for Akbayan and Aksyon Sambayanan (AkSa), the party-list of the dreaded NSA Sec. Norberto Gonzales. Is Akbayan aligning itself with the AFP, with the reactionary forces of our society? If that is true, what a big loss for Akbayan which I also consider as progressive party-list. Dapat magtutulong-tulong ang lahat ng progresibong partido. The more we have progressive party-list seats the more dynamic legislative performance in the House of in Representatives. As SANLAKAS has said -Defend the right of Bayan Muna and other Left party-lists to exist….. participate in the electoral contests. Sana ganito rin and stand ng Akbayan para hindi po kayo ma-isolate sa masa at isyu ng political killings at persecution ng Arroyo government sa mga militante at progresibo.

these rumors circulating that the afp is actively campaigning for akbayan are totally false. in fact our members have been experiencing harassment from AFP personnel elsewhere, most recently in these urban deployments in bailiwick areas where progressive party-lists including akbayan have members.

we have consistently denounced violence wherever the source is — whether it is from the extreme right or the extreme left, and our stance has always been for the protection of open and legal formations such as bayan muna and have always denounced the killings of their members. but of course with all differences taken into account, it is a thankless position we have taken, and are aware of it.

pls see our statement re the arrest warrant out on rep. satur ocampo: https://ettarosales.wordpress.com/2007/03/13/rather-than-arrest-satur-why-not-train-your-guns-on-cuenca-who-continues-to-squat-on-farmers-land/

Thanks for your response. It’s a big help that Rep. Etta Rosales is among the hundreds of thousands of Filipinos here and abroad condemning the baseless and no due process arrest warrant for Ka Satur. What we need now is the unity of the Filipino people against the corrupt, fraudulent, terroristic, anti-democratic, anti-people, and anti-biodiversity/environment administration of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. We must translate the gains of broad united front calling for Arroyo’s ouster into the electoral struggle. More and more progressive parties and opposition candidates must win in order kick-out Arroyo from Malacanang and advance the people’s agenda for democratic and meaningful social reforms. I would like to suggest that Akbayan must also condemn the filing of baseless disqualification charges against Bayan Muna, Anakpawis and Gabriela . I believe that the AFP is using Akbayan to pit against progressive parties. I would like to ask why is it that Mr. Joel Rocamora of Akbayan wrote an article that maliciously tag Bayan Muna as “front of the NPA”, the same propaganda line of the AFP, especially its psywar and intelligence departments? Mr. Rocamora wrote such article in 2004. Such statements are no different to Gen. Palparan. It’s very dangerous because it kills as Prof. Alston and Melo reports had shown. But, Akbayan must exert more effort for campaigns given that the party will lose 1 seat based on latest SWS survey if it wont consistently explain to the people that Akbayan is not an “AFP party-list” but a progressive party like Bayan Muna, Anakpawis, Gabriela, Sanlakas, PM, Suara BangsaMoro, and Kabataan party.

What about the possibility of pulling out of Iraq, letting Iran invade and lose resources fighting their own kind,
and then come in and mop up the dregs?
